Decimal addition

Decimal addition is like ordinary addition only. To add the given decimal numbers, let us follow the steps.

Step 1: Write the given decimal numbers one below the other so that the decimal points of all the numbers lined up.

Step2:Add zeros for the numbers which are having less digits after the decimal point.

Step3: Now add the numbers starting from the right digit (like ordinary addition). We should not forget to put the decimal point at the appropriate place.

Example for decimal addition:

Add 23.78+1.9

Solution:

Step1: Write the numbers one below the other decimal number.

                                23 . 78

                                   1 . 9

Step2: Add zeros for the numbers which are having less digits after the decimal point.

                                 23 . 78

                                   1 . 90

Step3: Let us add the numbers like normal addition starting from the right digit.

                                   23 . 78

                                                 1 . 90

                                ---------------

                          24  . 68

                                ---------------

Example:

Add 96.37+5+2.384

Solution:

Step1: Write the given numbers one below the other, so that the decimal point come in a line.

Step2: Add zeros for the numbers which are having less digits after the decimal point.

Step3: Let us add the numbers like normal addition.

We will do some more problems also.

Example:

Add 32.75+76.9+89.32+7

Solution:

                   32.75

                    76.90

                    89.32

                      7.00

                   --------

              205.97

Example:

Add:98.65, 67.321 and 5.7

Solution:

                    98.650

                    67.321

                      5.700

                   ------------

                   171.671

Important point:

We have to line up the decimals and add normally.

Practice Problems:

  1. Add:  76.9 + 3.871 + 7
  2. Add:  5 + 8.1 + 0.23
  3. Add 27.53 + 15.36
  4. Add 17.53 + 18.46
  5. Add 7.05 + 2.103
  6. Add 13.02 + 12.24

We can do some word problems on addition also in the following links.
